LYCOS RETRIEVER
Scary Movie: Cindy Campbell
built 240 days ago
The third installment in the Scary Movie spoof franchise pokes fun at sci-fi thrillers and sees TV news reporter Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) investigating mysterious crop circles on the farm of Tom Logan (Charlie Sheen). Other Cindy subplots that will ring a bell involve a mysterious videotape that kills one of her friends and an encounter with a prophet named Orpheus (Eddie Griffin), who tells Cindy she's "the one" and must help the president (Leslie Nielsen) prevent an alien invasion.

With Scary Movie 3, scenes taken from The Ring and Signs constitute the main "plot," if one can call it that, though vignettes from films 8 Mile and The Matrix are thrown into the mix, as well. Charlie Sheen steps into Mel Gibson's role as the retired preacher whose cornstalks become prey to an alien crop circle. Anna Faris, fresh from recent success in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, reprises her role of Cindy, now a television reporter who simultaneously investigates the crop ciricles and the terrifying circumstances of people dying seven days after watching a videotape.

While star Anna Faris returns for the third film in the Scary Movie series, the power behind the camera has shifted from the Wayans brothers to one of the Zucker brothers. The Zucker in question is David Zucker, and he's brought along his partner in movie-parody crime, Leslie Nielsen. This time around, aim is taken at such horror blockbusters as Signs and The Ring, while films of other genres, including Independence Day, 8 Mile, and The Matrix, are ... lampooned. The plot finds Cindy (Faris) trying to help the president (Nielsen) thwart an alien attack while also facing crop circles and a mysterious video tape. In the spirit of the two Matrix sequels, Scary Movie 3 was shot back-to-back with Scary Movie 4. Queen Latifah, Charlie Sheen, and Eddie Griffin also star.

If there's one thing you can say about the Scary Movie franchise, it's consistent. the first two garnered an R by the MPAA, but after the second had a poor showing at the box office, creators made a financially wise decision and moved the third grossfest to the PG-13 category. That brought the bottom line back into six figures. Otherwise, the concept--right down to the primary character, little blonde Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris)--hasn't changed a bit. And neither has the goal to insult as many identifiable groups as possible while at the same time spoofing as many movies as possible.

Scary Movie 4, with all the core regulars back in action, makes fun of War of the Worlds, The Grudge, The Village, Saw and Saw II, Million Dollar Baby, and Brokeback Mountain. With a better through-line connecting all the stories than its predecessor, Scary Movie 4 is a refreshing (albeit rank) addition to the series. Anna Faris and Regina Hall are back as the clueless Cindy Campbell, and the sex-crazed Brenda Meeks, respectively.

Faris, who romped through the previous ''Scary'' movies, is a fascinating comedy actor. She masochistically dares the movie to try and embarrass her, only to emerge unscathed from every crude gag. The priceless Regina Hall, playing the foulmouthed teacher of Cindy's psychic nephew... returns for a third helping, poking more holes in horror conventions.
