Scarlett Johansson is the husky-voiced young beauty who co-starred with Bill Murray in the Sofia Coppola film Lost in Translation (2003). She began acting when she was a kid, first on the New York stage, then in feature films, including North (1994) and Just Cause (1995). Critics raved about her performance in the independent production Manny & Lo (1996), but Johansson's appearance in The Horse Whisperer (1998, starring Robert Redford) was what grabbed the attention of moviegoers. Hailed as an up-and-comer, she went on to a lead role in Ghost World (2000, with Steve Buscemi), the movie version of the comic book by Daniel Clowes. The surprise success of Lost in Translation made her an international celebrity and a sought-after actor. Her other films include Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003, in which she played the model for the famous painting by Jan Vermeer), The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie (2004, starring SpongeBob SquarePants), the romantic office comedy In Good Company (2004, with Topher Grace), the sci-fi adventure The Island (2005, with Ewan McGregor), and the Woody Allen movies Match Point (2005, with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) and Scoop (2006, with Hugh Jackman).

Universally known as one of the sexiest women in Hollywood, Scarlett Johansson has actually been acting professionally since the age of eight. A native of New York City, where she was born on November 22, 1984, Johansson was raised -- along with her twin brother -- as the youngest of four children, and she developed an interest in acting at the age of three. After enrolling in classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute for Young People, she made her stage debut opposite Ethan Hawke in the off-Broadway production of Sophistry. Her film debut followed in 1994, when she had a supporting role in North, and she subsequently appeared in the little-seen Just Cause (1995) and If Lucy Fell (1996).

Scarlett Johansson has a twin brother named Hunter. They might have been born on the same day, but she still has "older sister" status: she beat him out of the womb by three minutes.

Since garnering critical acclaim for her role in 1998’s The Horse Whisperer with Robert Redford, Scarlett Johansson has moved to the top of many producers’ wish lists. A rare combination of sex appeal and genuine acting ability, Johansson’s “It Girl” status has only been enhanced by her Golden Globe-nominated roles in such acclaimed films as Lost in Translation, Girl With a Pearl Earring, and Woody Allen’s Match Point. Johnsson garnered a fair amount of press (and fanboy tongue-wagging) in 2005 when she revealed that while filming Michael Bay’s action thriller The Island with Ewan McGregor, she asked to be allowed to do her love scene topless (director Bay declined, citing his need to maintain a PG-13 rating).

In July 2005, Scarlett Johansson starred with Ewan McGregor in the Michael Bay-directed The Island. It was her debut as the female lead in a mainstream action film. She drew some attention when she mentioned that she'd wanted to film the sex scene in the film topless (she hadn't liked the bra the wardrobe department had given her) but director Michael Bay disapproved, wanting to turn in a PG-13 film. When the movie opened to weak reviews and an even weaker box office, the producers of the film accused Johansson of failing to connect or attract a mainstream audience.
