Scarlett Johansson: New York City
built 147 days ago
Scarlett Johansson Gallery Born in New York City on November 22, 1984, Scarlett Johansson is the youngest of four siblings -- she has an older brother and sister, as well as a twin brother. As might be expected of an acting prodigy, Scarlett had an unusually early interest in performing: She wanted to be an actress since age 3, and was acting professionally when she was only 8 years old. After taking classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute for Young People, Scarlett Johansson made her stage debut in the early 1990s in the off-Broadway production of Sophistry, alongside Ethan Hawke.

Scarlett Johansson was born and raised in New York City, but you probably wouldn’t know it from watching this video, in which she stumps for Senator Barack Obama. In the clip, filmed at Carleton College, a small liberal arts institution in Northfield, Minnesota, Ms. Johansson speaks to a group of students in an almost pitch-perfect Standard Midwestern accent. Amid the “yuh knowas” and “makun’ likes,” she recounts the first time she met Mr. Obama, someone she calls “an incredible thinker and mind.” The 23-year-old actress was apparently so “starstruck” by the encounter that a slightly unusual greeting tumbled out of Ms. Johansson’s mouth: “I love your wife!” The presidential hopeful returned the compliment, she tells the crowd, by “paddun me on tha hayd.”

Though she commands the lowest fee of any of the actresses on the Celebrity 100, Johansson has been filming a string of movies, back to back, earning the 22-year-old starlet a spot on the list. She is currently filming "The Nanny Diaries" in New York City. This year she inked a lucrative two-year endorsement deal with L'Oréal. She made a splash when she appeared nude on the cover of February's Vanity Fair with former designer Tom Ford and "Pirates of the Caribbean" actress Keira Knightley.
