Saxony and neighbouring Brandenburg are home to a national minority of western Slavs, the Sorbs. Visitors to the Lausitz region first become aware of this when they see road signs, place names and names above shops written in two languages. Their cultural centre is Bautzen and Saxony’s constitution expressly grants their culture state protection.

The landscape of Saxony-Anhalt is quite varied. From the region of Altmark in the north, the state extends from the Magdeburg region, a vast lowland, through the Harz, a low mountain range, until one comes to Thuringia. The highest mountain in the vicinity is Brocken, with an elevation of 1,141 meters (3,735 ft). Below the summit, there is a national park called Hochharz, which is an extensive wildlife sanctuary. All of this, as well as many other beautiful places of interest, are easily reachable on day excursions.

With its diverse higher-educational landscape, Lower Saxony offers students an abundance of promising opportunities for study. The state's universities, polytechnics (official name: Universities of Applied Science), colleges of the arts and vocational academies all have their own characteristic profiles, with different learning goals, subjects and courses of study.
According to the Saxony state constitution, the state parliament must be involved in decisions about the state bank. Instead of carrying out this constitutional duty, Gov. Georg Milbradt, without further ado, set aside the constitution for two days (!), using a clause in state budget regulations, which permits the suspension of the consultation responsibility "for compelling reasons." Then on the next Friday, Aug. 31, the state parliament debated the matter in hindsight, and state Finance Minister Metz announced his resignation.

Between the years 1697 and 1763, the Electors of Saxony also were elected Kings of Poland in personal union In 1485, Saxony was split as a collateral line of the Wettin princes received what later became Thuringia and founded several small states there; see Ernestine duchies. The remaining Saxon state became even more powerful, becoming known in the 18th century for its cultural achievements, although it was politically inferior to Prussia and Austria, which pressed Saxony from either side.
