Saxony looks back on more than a hundred years of automobile history. The companies Horch and Audi from Zwickau, DKW from Zschopau and Wanderer from Chemnitz, which in 1932 joined together to form »Auto-Union AG«, have their roots in Saxony. The GDR hit the Trabant from Zwickau and Wartburg continued in this tradition.

The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has approved a field trial with genetically modified peas in Gatersleben (Saxony-Anhalt) under certain conditions. Thanks to an inserted gene construct, the GM peas produce antibodies against certain infectious diseases.

A network of 42 technology centres for technology advice, technology mediation and technology-oriented business start-up support exists in Saxony to support the transfer of technology from universities, colleges and research and development facilities to small and medium businesses. This network includes two patent information centres, four technology advice centres (technology agencies), 15 technology transfer centres and 21 technology and business start-up centres.
