Saxony: Lower Saxony
built 280 days ago
The northwestern portion of Lower Saxony is a part of Frisia; it is called Ostfriesland (East Frisia) and lies on the coast of the North Sea. It includes seven islands, known as the East Frisian Islands. In the extreme west of Lower Saxony is the Emsland, a traditionally poor and sparsely populated area, once dominated by inaccessible swamps. The northern half of Lower Saxony... known as the North German Plains, is almost invariably flat except for the gentle hills around the Bremen geestland. Towards the south and southwest lie the nothern parts of the German Central Highlands, the Weserbergland (Weser mountain range) and the Harz mountains. Lower Saxony's major cities and economic centres are mainly situated in its central and southern parts, namely Hannover, Hildesheim, Wolfsburg, Salzgitter and Braunschweig.

Before 1180 the name Saxony was applied to the territory conquered between about AD 200 and 700 by the Germanic Saxon tribe. This territory included Holstein and the area west of the lower Elbe River, in what is now the German Land (state) of Lower Saxony. From there the Saxons expanded westward by sea to Britain in the 5th century. In the late 8th century the Saxons were conquered and Christianized by the Frankish ruler Charlemagne. In 843 Saxony became part of the East Frankish, or German, kingdom.

The German states of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein have agreed to have the Elbe River dredged so that modern containerships can navigate as far as Hamburg. The dredging, involving tens of thousands of tons of contaminated mud, will likely begin the second half of 1997.

The geographic concept of Saxony has undergone great shifts and has acquired many meanings in the past 15 centuries. The land of the Saxons, Saxony was in Frankish times roughly the area in NW Germany between the Elbe and Ems rivers; it ... included part of S Jutland. (This area corresponds in part to the state of Lower Saxony, created after World War II.)

The first Duchy of Saxony emerged about 700 in a region, which is completely different from the present state of Saxony: It was located in today's Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. In the 10th century the dukes of Saxony were at the same time kings (or emperors) of the Holy Roman Empire (Ottonian or Saxon Dynasty).

[KDE Dot News] Did Lower Saxony people knew that "KDE can't print nicely!" before migration? Which will be supposed to be fixed by QT4 and KDE 4, expected by a year at soonest. Till then they should use Gnome/Openoffice for printing. TTF printouts are crappy with KDE Print System. They should wait the migration till KDE 4 comes out, or perhaps they don't use printing at all that's why they migrated to KDE 3.x and QT3.x.
