Sauron: Vala Melkor
built 274 days ago
For a while, Sauron apparently kept up the pretence that he was a faithful servant of the Valar, all the while feeding Melkor information about their doings. Thus, when the Valar made Almaren as their first physical abode in the world, “Melkor knew of all that was done; for even then he had secret friends and spies among the Maiar whom he had converted to his cause, and of these the chief, as after became known, was Sauron.”[16]
[One] name Sauron gave himself while in Eregion was Aulendil meaning "devoted to the Vala Aule." The element ndil means "devotion." Aule was a great smith and craftsman, and Sauron was originally one of his Maiar before he turned evil and switched his allegiance to Morgoth.

Sauron served in the beginning Aulë but Melkor had him dragged to his side and Sauron became his prince and greatest servant. Sauron was perverted to Melkor`s service from the early counting of time and he served as his spy in the Valian Year 3400 when the Valar had their abode upon Almaren.

Sauron fundamentally believed that he could set the world in order, bring it out of the chaos that Morgoth and his wars with the Valar and Eldar had created, and restore it to its original purposes. But, because of his pride, "his plans...became the sole object of his will" (ibid.). Sauron forgot why he wanted to bring order to the world, and simply focused on bringing order to it.

Sauron's role in the War of Wrath is not known. After the war, Sauron feared the wrath of the Valar and he came forth in a fair form and renounced his evil deeds to Eonwe, the herald of the Vala Manwe. Eonwe told Sauron that he must go to the Undying Lands to be judged by Manwe. But Sauron was ashamed and humiliated and he wanted to escape punishment, so he fled and continued his evil ways.

At some point, Sauron left the Blessed Realm and went to Middle-earth, the central continent of Arda. In one text, Tolkien wrote about Sauron that “in Valinor he had dwelt among the people of the gods, but there Morgoth had drawn him to evil and to his service”.[18] It would seem that Sauron now definitely sided with Melkor. No longer just a spy and secret sympathizer, he deserted his service to the Valar and openly joined their great enemy: “Because of his admiration of Strength he had become a follower of Morgoth and fell with him down into the depths of evil.”[19]
