The Saturn was a powerful machine for the time. However, the Saturn design, with two CPUs and 6 other processors, made it difficult to get the maximum performance out of the console. Rumours had it that the original plan called for a single processor, but a second one was added in late development when the designers realized they had underestimated the PlayStation's 3D capabilities. The parallel design was too complex for many game developers. Yu Suzuki is reported to have said:

The Sega Saturn received a 'lukewarm' reception in the states, and this can be put down to two main factors, cost and marketing. The Saturn cost $100 more than the Playstation, which at $400 made it too expensive for most gamers. But the main factor for the Saturns' poor start, and ultimately its decline altogether was Sonys' experience in the PR department. This last factor is definitely the reason the Saturn failed in the UK; Sega basically had no marketing for the Saturn and solely relied on its reputation and the success of the Megadrive.

Saturn Bomberman utilizes Dinosaur helpers, which are initially found as eggs released upon the destruction of a soft block. Dinosaurs come in three levels: babies (the weakest), adolescents, and adults (the strongest). Dinosaurs can only take one hit no matter how large they are. If a player is riding a dinosaur when this happens, the dinosaur takes the hit instead of the player. As powerups are collected, a special meter at the top of the screen slowly builds up. Once this meter is full, the dinosaur will grow one level, from baby to adolescent or adolescent to adult.

The Sega Saturn, as with nearly all consoles, was initially released in Japan. On November 22nd 1994, the Saturns' launch date, over 150,000 machines were sold, and this number rose to half a million by the time Christmas arrived. It continued to sell well, and it is estimated that over five million consoles were sold in Japan, making it a more successful machine there than the Nintendo 64.

The Saturn was discontinued in 1998 in the US. While this lead to the cancellation of highly anticipated games such as: Sonic X-treme, Policenauts and Lunar: The Silver Star Story, the discontinuing of the Saturn ... brought the release of arguably the greatest and most rare Saturn games like: Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Ranger, Shining Force 3 and Magic Knight Rayearth.
