Saturn ION The Saturn Ion is the brand's entry-level car. Aimed at younger buyers, it has edgy styling and design features and a strong 2.2-liter engine. Over the past few years, Saturn has gone through a brand restructuring by moving more upscale in appearance and price. It has announced that it will eliminate the Ion after only one generation, replacing it with a new compact car based on the Opel Astra, which General Motors currently offers in Europe.

Saturn Ion is an inexpensive compact car that emphasizes style and innovation as well as value. Ion’s high levels of sophistication, content, fun and functionality were designed to appeal to young customers. The Saturn Ion is intended to carry on the Saturn tradition of being at the top of the class when it comes to safety and security. Dent-deflecting and rust-resistant plastic body panels add to the Ion's appeal. Acceleration is good for its price class, ride and handling about average. In interior comfort and refinement, Saturn still has a way to go. But experience has shown that people choose Saturns as much for the hassle-free buying experience as the for car's actual character and performance.

Equipped with 16” alloy wheels, as well as easy handling with good stabilization and control, the Saturn Ion performs well on the road. Averaging an impressive 26 mpg in the city, 35 on the highway (manual transmission), the Saturn Ion provides excellent fuel consumption, certainly a wise choice that will fit well within everyone’s budget. The stylish, trim lines of the exterior are complemented with the comfort and convenience of the interior design of the Saturn Ion. There’s plenty of room inside both models, with a large trunk space, fold-flat front passenger seat, center console storage, cupholders, and the advanced technology of OnStarâ navigation. Buyers can take a step up from the no-frills Ion 2 to the Ion 3, which is equipped with power mirrors and windows, a/c, cruise, and an upgraded audio system with a CD/MP3 player and pre-programmed equalizer. In addition, it has front disc and rear drum brakes, a multi-function keyless remote, tilt steering column, driver lumbar support, and warning sounds.
The Saturn Ion adds unprecedented levels of refinement for 2005. Sedan models feature a new front fascia and grille, while new seats (Ion·2/Ion·3) and a larger, four-spoke steering wheel highlight interior upgrades. And getting to the destination is more enjoyable than ever, thanks to improvements in ride and handling as well as reductions in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels.

At the time the Saturn Ion was first introduced by GM in 2003, it was considered the longest compact car sold in North America. Replacing the S-series, it featured a standard 140 hp engine with either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. The manufacturer has brought in a number of improvements and advanced technology in the past few years, all of which have added to the overall quality and smooth performance of the Saturn Ion.
The Saturn Ion, an all-new model for 2003, replaces the old S Series models. Novel features in the Ion include rustproof, dent-resistant vertical body panels; interior trim kits to change the colour of the instrument panel, shifter and heater control panel; and owner changeable roof rails that are color-coordinated with the interior trim kits.
