built 224 days ago
Saturday Night Live on DVD Created by Lorne Michaels over three decades ago, Saturday Night Live has had the cultural impact and relevance that few shows can claim. Nowhere else can you see the complete first season of SNL, featuring hosts George Carlin, Rob Reiner, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor, Elliott Gould, Candice Bergen, or original musical performances by Simon & Garfunkel, ABBA, Patti Smith, Jimmy Cliff, and Carly Simon.

Since its debut in 1975, "Saturday Night Live" has been the gold standard for edgy, irreverent comedy on television, showcasing some of the brightest comedic lights in the past 30 years. Created by Emmy winner Lorne Michaels, who ... serves as executive producer and writer, the program, produced by Broadway Video has won 18 Emmy Awards and been nominated for more than 80, as well as winning the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award. With eight million viewers tuning in each week, the late-night comedy showcase has become a show business institution, and the most enduring and celebrated comedy franchise in television history.
photo from rutlemania.org On April 24, 1976, Lorne Michaels, producer of NBC's Saturday Night, made an on-air offer of $3000 to The Beatles if they would re-unite and perform on the show. The offer was a hilarious spoof on the absurdly high reunion offers that were regularly making the news at the time, in which The Beatles were offered as much as one hundred million dollars for a single concert.

Writer MICHAEL O'DONOGHUE was a founding member of the Saturday Night Live team and even appeared in the show's very first sketch in 1975. He was associated with the show for years, though most of his on-camera appearances came in the 1975-78 seasons. O'Donoghue died of a massive stroke in 1994 at age 54, which isn't exactly dying 'young' but is close enough for the purposes of this curse.

The "SNL" cast and writers collaborated on staging the special "Saturday Night Live _ On Strike!" event at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre to benefit the behind-the-scenes staff affected by the strike. The live performance was not officially sanctioned by NBC, but "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels, who celebrated his 63rd birthday, did attend.
