Saturday Night Live: Chevy Chase

"Saturday Night Live" presents "The Best of Cheri Oteri." A cast member who emerged early as a star in her time on the show from 1995-2000, Oteri led the first wave of hilarious women on the show into the 21st Century. Included in the 90 minute special are such indelible Oteri characters as Arianna the Spartan Spirit Cheerleader and Cass Van Ry the clueless co-host of "Morning Latte," both opposite Will Ferrell. Other popular characters included are the cantankerous Rita, the oversexed Mrs. Zimmerman (opposite Chris Kattan), Nadine (who demands that you "Simma Down Now") and the prescription-addled Collette Reardon. In addition, Oteri created impeccable impressions ranging from Barbara Walters in the hilarious parodies of "The View" as well as Judge Judy and Debbie Reynolds in the uproarious "Leg Up" sketch with Molly Shannon as Ann Miller. Superstar hosts featured with Oteri on this "Best Of" include Cameron Diaz, Britney Spears, Tobey Maguire, Christopher Walken and Chevy Chase.

From the beginning, Saturday Night Live provided America with some of its most popular characters and catch-phrases. Radner's Roseanne Roseannadana ("It's always something") and Emily Litella ("Never mind"), Belushi's Samurai, Aykroyd's Jimmy Carter, Murphy's Mr. Robinson, Billy Crystal's Fernando ("You look mahvelous"), Martin Short's Ed Grimley, Lovitz's pathological liar, Carvey's Church Lady ("Isn't that special?") and Carvey and Kevin Nealon's Hans and Franz have all left marks on popular culture. The program's regular news spot has been done by Chase, Curtin, Aykroyd, Nealon and Dennis Miller, among others and, at its best, provided sharp comic commentary on current events. It was particularly strong with Miller as the reader.

Saturday Night Live achieved a large and loyal following, especially among young viewers. It became a national forum for political satire, with presidential politics a particular specialty. Chevy Chase's impersonations of a stumbling Gerald Ford in the earliest seasons provided some of the most memorable moments from the show. Lorne Michaels was the show's producer, guiding force, and occasional on-screen presence. He left temporarily in 1980, but returned in 1985.

By the second season, “Saturday Night” was a veritable phenomenon, with a cast that included: Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin and the show’s first superstar, Weekend Update host, Chevy Chase. By the middle of the second season, the increasingly difficult Chase would leave the show to pursue a movie career, but one of the show’s most famous alumni, Bill Murray, would soon replace him.

Beginning with the second episode, fans began complaining that Saturday Night Live wasn't as funnay as it used to be. This was the beginning of a slow decline (marked, unfortunately, by Chevy Chase's suicide in 1976 after leaving the show, probably on the realization that he wasn't really that funny), due primarily to Michaels' paranoia (and an affair with Carrot Top, which led to a considerable loss of talent on his part).
