There are no publicly available facts concerning the cross-compatibility of the satellites themselves. If it is possible to use XM satellites to propagate Sirius's signal, this would give Sirius immediate access to a second geostationary satellite, which would improve reception for stationary receivers, such as those at businesses and homes. In the long term, consolidating transponders on to fewer satellites will reduce infrastructure costs significantly: to build and launch one satellite can cost more than US$300 million,[26] with a lifetime of approximately 15 years. Once next generation of satellites begins construction, combining satellite networks could result in a savings of US$40 million a year.

Amateur astronomers seeking new challenges, find that spotting faint, rapidly moving satellites, such as the tiny Vanguard 1 (America's second satellite), are comparable to spotting a distant galaxy. Tracking down a newly launched spy satellite in a secret orbit, tests analytical as well as observational skill. Observing the International Space Station transit the sun, moon or one of the planets, requires planning, perseverance, and often a bit of luck.

The satellites incorporate a modern design based on flight-proven performance. The three previous TDRS satellites were based on Boeing 702-class electronics, which are still the standard for the newest spacecraft Boeing is building today. Additionally, Boeing has modernized the technologies in the payload, power and propulsion subsystems to current state-of-the-art technologies being used in other Boeing-built spacecraft.

For users who establish their own direct readout receiving station, the GOES satellites transmit low resolution imagery in the WEFAX service. WEFAX can be received with an inexpensive receiver. Highest resolution Imager and Sounder data is found in the GVAR primary data user service which requires more complex receiving equipment. More information about establishing receiving stations can be obtained from the Email contact at the bottom of the page.

Europe's commercial satellite launching company Arianespace has won contracts to send up two satellites for Japan's JSAT Corporation. The launch contracts are Arianespace's 20th and 21st for Japanese commercial satellites, the company said in a statement issued in Tokyo, adding the European company had previously sent up four satellites for JSAT, the country's leading satellite operator. The contracts concern JSAT's JCSAT-9 digital communications satellite and a future satellite, Arianespace said.

The ultra compact three-piece system features two micro-sized satellites and a separate subwoofer. High performance state-of-the-art digital-to-analog circuitry and a three-channel amplifier to power the subwoofer and two satellites are housed within the subwoofer cabinet. The system's master volume and mode controls are conveniently located on one of the satellites for easy user access. Since the subwoofer reproduces only non-localizable deep bass tones, it can be located well away from the satellites -- maximizing the system's placement flexibility.
