FAB-T is an Air Force initiative to provide a multi-mission capable family of terminals that is based on a common design and open system architecture so it can communicate with different satellites. These radio systems enable information exchange between ground, airborne, and space platforms. Once operational, FAB-T is designed to provide critical, protected beyond line-of- sight communications for warfighters via the new Advanced Extremely High Frequency (Advanced EHF) System, a new class of secure military satellites. In subsequent increments, FAB-T is expected to enable interchange with other beyond line-of sight and national satellite communications systems.

Many satellites are powered by rechargeable batteries, taking advantage of the ultimate battery charger, the sun. Silvery solar panels are prominent features on many satellites. Other satellites have fuel cells that convert chemical energy to electrical energy, while a few rely on nuclear energy. Small thrusters provide attitude, altitude, and propulsion control to modify and stabilize the satellite's position in space.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems has awarded ITT Industries Aerospace/Communications Division (A/CD), a $39M contract to upgrade up to twelve Global Positioning System (GPS) Block IIR satellites. The satellite payloads will be modified to incorporate a second civilian signal and two new military signals.

GOES satellites are owned and operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) while the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) manages the design, development and launch of the spacecraft. Once launched, NOAA once again resumes responsibility for the satellites. There are other geostationary satellites operated by other countries wihich contribute to cover the rest of the Earth.

Based on the navigation user range error, which measures GPS accuracy, the Block IIR and IIR-M satellites enable properly equipped users to determine precise time and velocity, and worldwide latitude, longitude and altitude to within one meter. Air Force Space Command's 2nd Space Operations Squadron (2 SOPS) at Schriever Air Force Base, Colo., manages and operates the GPS constellation for both civil and military users.
