Satanism: Laveyan Satanists
built 631 days ago
Satanism is not a monolithic, unified whole in its organizational structure, beliefs and practices, as some may believe. Most local groups are pretty much autonomous, not associating with one another. A few groups associate with other groups, but only within their own organization and not with Satanists outside their alliance. For instance, individual chapters (called grottoes) of Anton LaVey's Church of Satan (to be discussed later) interact with one another.

The most important holiday in Satanism is one's own birthday, as it is the birthdate of one's own god. This is as a reminder that to a Satanist, you are the most important being in the universe, and to honor your own vital existence and your life. LaVey recommends that a Satanist celebrate their own birthday in any way they choose, with as much pomp and ceremony as they see fit. The Satanic celebration of the birthday can ... be seen as a mockery of the holidays commemorating the birth of various gods or saints in other religions.
Satanism gained new ground under the protection of Liberalism and Romanticism during the nineteenth century. In England, the more virulent new forms surfaced around Oxford University'sJohn Ruksin and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Out of this came theosophy, British "guild" socialism, the Fabian Society, Bertrand Russell, H. G. Wells, and Aleister Crowley -- Satanists all.

Satanism seems more common in the industrial and heavy metal scenes, but goths are often mislabeled as satanists. Contrary to popular lore, satanists do not actually worship the devil or believe in an after-life. They might be better categorized as occult hedonists, and maybe just hedonists. Satanists stress self-reliance and the principle that might makes right. In fact, they might have become a viable political party, but in this country, there was too much existing competition.

Satanism is further described as being a de facto personality type as, in the words of Anton LaVey, "Satanists are born, not made." To try is to lie. It takes a certain set of predispositions to accurately label oneself a Satanist, to naturally feel at home with all that Satanism entails. Satanism, as a philosophy, can be potentially taken and learned from by a large percentage of the population, but this does not make one a Satanist, but, perchance, Satanic. Qualities such as cowardice, insecurity, self-loathing, drug addiction, stupidity, constant life failures, unconditional niceness, and lack of direction (and there are MANY more) are clear indicators that the person in question and the title of Satanist are NOT compatible. For such a person, Satanism isn't a direct reflection of one's core (as it is with Satanists), it can only be a human improvement program at best, which is valid on that level only.
It is apparent from a study of history that the specter of Satanism was created by the Christian church. Many of the erroneous beliefs about Satanists still believed today can be traced to The Malleus Maleficarum (Witch's Hammer) (1486) by Heinrich Kramer and James Sprenger. [1] The book was a handbook for inquisitors.
