Satan: Protestant Christians
built 291 days ago
Revelation 2:8-9: Satan is portrayed as the power behind the Roman Empire's persecution of the Christians. The author apparently condemns ex-Christians who pretend that they are Jewish in order to avoid the persecution. They are referred to as the "Synagogue of Satan."
Satan is a defeated foe and a created being. He has no power or authority over the Christian. His power is not greater than God's power and on the last day, he will be cast into the lake of fire along with all those who followed him and denied Christ.

Satan distracts by trying to keep believers from public assembly worship, Heb. 10:25. He tempts the believer with an improper emphasis on details of life such as money, success, social life, pleasure, loved ones, health, sex, materialistic things, or status symbols. The mature believer knows that his happiness is not derived from these things, so he is not a slave to them. The novice Christian... may try to gain happiness from such things, and this will distract him from the Word of God.

Satan's relationship with Metrobius is very much an equal one, despite Metrobius being only human. Satan's not about to cheat on him, or do anything else to endanger the partnership. It's probably something he needs after centuries of emotional turmoil and casual sex with half-willing Christian priests.
In some strains of rabbinic thought, Satan is linked with the "evil impulse," which is ... personified to some degree. This personification is a Jewish form of the widespread and ancient assumption that human beings can be subjected to malevolent forces distinct from their conscious minds. Thus, both in Judaism and in Christianity the belief is found that human beings can be "possessed" by the devil or by his subordinates, the demons.

A similar view of Satan is held not just by Catholics and by Protestant fundamentalists, but ... by moderately conservative Protestants. See, for example, The Screwtape Letters and "Screwtape Proposes a Toast" by C.S. Lewis.
