Canadian farmer, Percy Schmieser, vs Monsanto -- for the past year this Saskatchewan farmer has been in litigation with Monsanto. The company's genetically engineered canola plants were found growing on his field, apparently after pollen from modified plants had blown onto his property from nearby farms.
In 2005, Saskatchewan celebrated its centennial. To honour it the Royal Canadian Mint issued a commemorative 5-dollar coin depicting Canada's wheat fields as well as a circulation 25-cent coin of a similar design. Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh visited Regina, Saskatoon and Lumsden and Joni Mitchell issued an album in Saskatchewan's honour.

Even though it has a small-town feel, Saskatchewan has an international reputation for hosting large and prestigious events. The Annual Royal Red Arabian Horse Show is an international competition featuring some of the finest Arabians on the continent. The Western Canadian Agribition and the Farm Progress Show are two major annual agricultural trade shows that attract thousands of people from around the world.
Saskatchewan is often referred to as Canada’s breadbasket, as the province produces 28 percent of Canada's grain and over 54 percent of Canada's wheat crop. While agriculture is still very important to Saskatchewan’s economy, generating almost $2 billion annually, service-based sectors such as finance, insurance and real estate ($3.3 billion) ... make a significant impact. The unemployment rate in Saskatchewan presently hovers around 5.1%, and is therefore below the Canadian average, making Saskatchewan a good place to find work in Canada. The province is also rich in minerals (potash, uranium, coal, oil and natural gas) and Canada’s leading exporter of potash (fertilizer).
