In 1899, 7,400 Doukhobors left Russia for what's now Saskatchewan. Their new country offered them freedom of religion, land, and the pacifist lifestyle that underpinned their belief in universal brotherhood. And for a while, with some help from friends like Leo Tolstoy and the Quakers, the Doukhobors flourished in rural Saskatchewan.
