Saruman was bekend onder meerdere namen: in het Quenya was zijn naam Curummo, in het Sindarijns werd hij Curúnir genoemd. Zijn naam betekende: man van de listige kunstgrepen. Van alle Istarí was hij degene die het meest de tactieken van de vijand, Sauron, had bestudeerd.

Just as Sharku is about to begin his charge, he gets word that Saruman requires him to detach a Warg Rider force to aid in ambushing a group of strange warriors crossing the land in the north. Sharku has two objectives here: to get as many riders through to attack the refugee column (as described in the original scenario) and to retreat with the rest of his troops to fight the reinforcements from the north.

Saruman was originally a Maia known as Curumo. The Maiar were spirits who helped and served the Valar in the Undying Lands. Curumo was one of the Maiar of Aule, the Vala whose domain was the substances of which the earth was made. Aule was a smith and a master of crafts and works of skill, and from him Curumo gained much knowledge.

Saruman probably drew his original strength of Orcs from tribes in the Misty Mountains, and perhaps from Moria Orcs. He made use of Warg-mounted Orcs of the same kind that Bilbo and the dwarves fled from after they had been captured at the High Pass near Rivendell.
