Sargon: Mediterranean Sea
built 276 days ago
The land Sargon ruled over was great indeed, extending throughout Mesopotamia, from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Black Sea in the north. He sent expeditions into Asia Minor and southeast Arabia, with varying degrees of success. In the process, he spread not only the military wisdom of his army but ... the cultural wisdom of Sumeria, the civilization that he conquered. Thus, the Sumerians lived on in their inventions: the first written language, the first use of the wheel, the first use of irrigation, and the first library, among others.

Sargon's own compositions include three operas, as well as many vocal works. His song cycle, Waves of the Sea, won first prize in the NATS national competition in 1993, and is recorded on the Gasparo label.

[Sargon] had neither rival nor equal. His splendor, over the lands it diffused. He crossed the sea in the east. In the eleventh year he conquered the western land to its farthest point. He brought it under one authority. He set up his statues there and ferried the west's booty across on barges.
