For the purposes of this essay, the beginning of Sardinia's prehistory can be dated to the arrival of cardial impressed ware early in the sixth millennium BCE, probably brought by colonizers from Corsica or from the continent via Corsica. From the earliest period, Sardinia was in contact with extra-insular communities in Corsica, Liguria, Lombardy and Provence as is attested by the presence of obsidian from Sardinia in those regions. The earliest Neolithic, although best attested at coastal sites, is ... found in the interior of the island. This culture evolved into an epicardial horizon, called Filiestru, which further evolved into the Middle-Neolithic culture known as Bonu Ighinu (ca. 4500 - 4000 BCE). Continued exportation of Sardinian obsidian to the continent finds a reflex in Sardinia in ceramic parallels with a wider range of cultures in the 5500-4000 BCE horizon in N. Italy and Provence.

Much of the sporting fun on Sardinia is based around the sea, and the waters around the island boast some of the best dive sites in Europe. Three famous shipwrecks off the south of the island make fantastic exploration grounds for experienced scuba divers, and there are several less demanding sites where novices can hone their skills. Windsurfing is available from many of Sardinia’s beaches and sailing is a top summer pastime. Like all of Italy, the Kingdom of Sardinia was troubled with political instability, under alternating governments. After a very short and disastrous second war with Austria, Charles Albert abdicated on March 23, 1849, in favour of his son Victor Emmanuel II.

Sardinia has an area of 24,090 km2 and a population of 1.65 million. It was called "Ichnusa" by the Phoenicians and "Sandalyon" by the Greeks because of its shape, recalling a footprint.

On March 5, 1860 Parma, Tuscany, Modena and Romagna voted in referendums to join the Kingdom of Sardinia. This alarmed Napoleon who feared a strong Savoyard state on his southeastern border and he insisted that if the Kingdom of Sardinia were to keep the new acquisitions they would have to cede Savoy and Nice to France. This was done after dubious referendums showed around 90% majorities in both areas in favour of joining France.
