After the Roman ‘occupation ‘there were dark periods and feudal battles that divided Sardinia into four territories separated and practically independant called "giudicati". They were called as their territories or their main cities, in the north; Logodoro (or Torres) and Gallura, in the south; Arborea (with capital at Oristano) and Cagliari. Of the origins of these "giudicati" little is known as they were born in the Sardinian ‘dark ages’. Of these "giudicati" three disappeared after 1200, first under the protection of Pisa and later Genoa, the only survivor was ArborŽa. From this period, the ever fascinating memory of a liberty and an autonomy remains as does the memory of Eleonora d’ArborŽa, the judge who during the imprisonment of her husband continued to lead the "national " war.

The columns at Tharros There are thousands of Nuraghi on the Island of Sardinia. The nuraghi are stone built towers where the Nurghic people settled. Some date back as far as 1500 B.C. and are a testament to the architectural prowess of Sardinia's first inhabitants. The oldest, biggest and best-known Nuraghe is Su Nuraxi, south of Oristano and north of Cagliari, but if you can't get there, don't worry, there are only a few 1000 more around the island to visit and are well sign-posted for visitors.
