Sardinia: Mediterranean Sea

Sardinia villa, Villa Salinedda B Sardinia is the Mediterranean isle with a difference - a sunny slice of Italy but exotically different. The second-largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is ... one of the least known but without doubt, one of the loveliest.
Sardinia is only now emerging as a serious wine producer. The coastal areas are ideal for raising vines, but of course these were traditionally sparsely populated, with the population fleeing the constant stream of invaders and sheltering in the mountains. As with the food, the wines are a mixture brought from all over the Mediterranean by those invaders. Aragon brought Spanish grapes, today yielding Vermentino whites from Sassari, Carignano in Sulcis, and Giro in Cagliari. There is Vernaccia, a sherry-type wine, the dry version drunk as an aperitif and the sweet as a dessert wine. Torbato, again of Spanish provenance, provides soft, flowery whites.

The Food: Food in Sardinia represents the healthiest of the Mediterranean cuisines. Introducing guests to the food of Sardinia will be a focus of the experience there. Traditional Sardinian cooking uses all local products and wine, with a particular emphasis on vegetables and fruits. Some samples of Sardinian cooking; spaghetti with clams and bottarga, fish grilled over rosemary branches, roasted potatoes from the garden, and many types of grilled vegetables; eggplant, peppers, onions, zucchini, and fennel. The interior of Sardinia is known for the quality of their meats. The pecorino cheese is ... famous, made from the milk of the prized Razza sheep.

Click for map of The second largest island in the Mediterranean (after Sicily), Sardinia (Sardegna) is almost equidistant between the Italian mainland (Tuscany) and north Africa. With three international airports (Olbia, Alghero and Cagliari) it is accessible but blessedly unspoiled.
Grazia Deledda, Nobel award winner in 1926 In prehistory the inhabitants of Sardinia developed a trade in obsidian, a volcanic glass used for the production of stone age tools, and this activity brought Sardinians into contact with most of the Mediterranean people. Dried grapes, recently found in several locations, have been DNA tested and proved to be the oldest grapes in the world, dating back to 1200 BC. The Cannonau wine is made from these grapes and may therefore qualify as the mother of all the European wines.

NIA and Italian investigators are focusing their attention on Sardinia, a secluded Mediterranean island. Since settlers first occupied the island thousands of years ago, the population has grown without much immigration from the outside world. Because they are more closely related than people living in other societies, Sardinians share much of the same genetic information, which makes it easier to track genetic effects through generations.
