Sardinia: Costa Smeralda
built 605 days ago
The Costa Smeralda, in northeast Sardinia, is the best-known upmarket beach area, while on the northwest coast is the popular package tourist town of Alghero. Cágliari has the popular 6 mile white sand stretch of Poetto Beach, or try the turquoise sea and fairly unspoilt, laid-back beach of La Pelosa, near Stintino on the north western tip of the island.
Tourism is one of the most important industries on Sardinia these days. The northern part of the island boasts the second largest city, Sassari, site of one of the most spectacular folk festivals in the Mediterranean, the so-called 'Calvacata Sarda'. Held on the next-to-last Sunday in May, it is a morning procession of hundreds of costumed participants, many on horseback, from around the island, followed by an evening of dance and song. The northeastern part of the island boasts the famous Costa Smeralda, site of Porto Cervo and its yacht clubs of the stars. The same area is now witnessing a blossoming of time-sharing condos for the less rich and famous.
Beaches are not in short supply in Sardinia, just take your pick. Don't forget you towel, sun screen, hat, sun glasses, a good book and your snorkelling gear. Some of the better ones are in the Costa Smeralda and others include Is Arutas, Is Arenas and San Giovanni di Sinis.

Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro B&B Golfo Aranci, Sardegna hotel with pool & wireless The Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro is set in the incredible scenario of the famous Golfo Aranci on Sardinia island, one of the most beautiful destinations of the Mediterranean basin. The hotel is situated on the beach with a fully open view of the multicolor sea and is one of the most exclusive touristic destinations of "Costa Smeralda", along with Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo.
Although the white sand beaches and turquoise waters will probably be the focus of your holiday, it would be a pity to ignore the many other features, which make Sardinia a great destination. And whether you're exploring the stunning mountain scenery, snorkelling over Roman ruins at Nora, shopping in the chic marinas of the Costa Smeralda or wandering through the narrow, historic streets of Alghero you will always be greeted with warmth and geniality from the locals.
