Sarcoidosis: Skin
built 632 days ago
A biopsy of the affected area of skin is required for diagnosis of sarcoidosis. In addition to this simple procedure, a physician may order some blood tests and x-rays depending on the severity of the disease.
Source:
Immunological studies on sarcoidosis patients show that many of the immune functions associated with thymus-derived white blood cells, called T-lymphocytes or T-cells, are depressed. The depression of this cellular component of systemic immune response is expressed in the inability of the patients to evoke a delayed hypersensitivity skin reaction ( a positive skin test), when tested by the appropriate foreign substance, or antigen, underneath the skin.
Cutaneous manifestations of sarcoidosis are common and varied, and one patient can have different types of sarc skin lesions at the same time. Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease, so be suspicious of sarcoidosis if you have a skin problem and you've already been diagnosed with sarcoidosis.
