Sarcoidosis: People
built 646 days ago
Sarcoidosis affects men and women of all ages and races worldwide. It occurs mostly in people ages 20 to 40; African Americans, especially women; and people of Asian, German, Irish, Puerto Rican, and Scandinavian origin.
Sarcoidosis occurs more frequently in Caucasians of European descent and among African-Americans. It is most common in young people between the ages of 20 and 40 and affects women more than men.
Sarcoidosis mainly affects people between 20 to 40 years of age. White women are just as likely as white men to get sarcoidosis, but the black female gets sarcoidosis two times as often as the black male.
Anyone can get sarcoidosis. It occurs in all races and in both sexes, but mainly in people between 20 and 40 years of age. The risk is greater if you are a young African-American adult (especially a woman) or of Scandinavian, German, Irish or Puerto Rican origin. White women are just as likely as white men to get sarcoidosis but, among African Americans, females get sarcoidosis two times as often as males.
Sarcoidosis can occur at any age and in people of any race. An old belief that it is more common in blacks has been disproved. It most commonly affects adults between the ages of 20 and 50.
The cause of sarcoidosis is not known. Researchers, including your physicians at Mount Sinai Medical Center, have been working diligently for over 80 years to find the cause so that they can then work toward finding a cure. Their work continues. Sarcoidosis can affect anyone, from any race, socioeconomic, gender, geographic background or age group, although most often it is found in people from 20 to 40 years old. Once viewed to be a rare disease, it is now found worldwide. In the United States, it is more common in African-Americans than whites.
