Sarcoidosis: Conditions
built 632 days ago
Sarcoidosis affects men and women of all races and ages. The condition usually presents in adults younger than 40 years, most frequently between 20 and 29 years of age. It is slightly more predominant in women than in men, with an incidence of 6.3 and 5.9 cases per 100,000 person-years, respectively. The lifetime risk of sarcoidosis for U.S. whites is estimated at 0.85 percent compared with 2.4 percent in U.S. blacks. Sarcoidosis is most prevalent in Swedes, Danes, and U.S. blacks. Mortality from sarcoidosis, usually caused by respiratory failure, approaches 1 to 5 percent.

Sarcoidosis shares much in common with other autoimmune diseases. Research on any particular one usually, but not always, applies to the other autoimmune diseases. They have similar underlying causes and conditions, and consequently similar ways of dealing with them.
Sarcoidosis has repeatedly been associated with celiac disease. Some researchers seem to view it as a condition which results from untreated celiac disease, while others see it as coincident with celiac disease. Here are a couple of references you might want to look at:

Member and Physician Consultant Unfortunately, sarcoidosis of the lungs causes granulomas that can obstruct the smaller airways (air trapping). This places the diver with this condition at risk for pulmonary barotrauma ('burst lung') when diving with compressed air. On ascent, you might develop gas embolism or pneumothorax (lung collapse) and possible death from drowning or cerebral damage from bubbles in the arterial circulation.

Pulomonary Hypertension is a severe condition that may develop as a result of sarcoidosis. PH is a form of high blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, which connects the heart to the lungs.
Regular followup care is important, even if a person isn't taking medication for their sarcoidosis. New symptoms can occur at any time, and the condition can get worse slowly, without the person noticing.
