Sarah Michelle Gellar (born April 14, 1977) is an American actress. After several television acting roles during the 1990s, Gellar became famous for playing Buffy Summers in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. After Buffy, she started acting in movies. She has starred in the family films Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) , the movie Harvard Man (2001), and the horror moviess The Return (2006), The Grudge 2 (2006), The Grudge (2004) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). She ... won an award for her part in the 1999 film Cruel Intentions.

The 5' 3," sandy blonde-haired Gen-Y icon Sarah Michelle Gellar's life story reads like a preteen wish fulfillment fantasy. Born in Manhattan in 1977 and discovered by an agent in a Manhattan restaurant at the age of four, Gellar signed for her first role (in the 1983 telemovie An Invasion of Privacy) not one week later. A plethora of bit parts in television series (Spenser: For Hire) and theatrical films (Over the Brooklyn Bridge, 1984; Funny Farm, 1988; High Stakes, 1989) followed, before Gellar landed a recurring role, in the early '90s, on the decades-long daytime soap opera All My Children. Throughout the early years of her career, Gellar was managed and supervised by her mother, a former nursery-school teacher who insisted on straight A's as a prerequisite of an acting career. Sarah Michelle Gellar was "discovered" at age 4, while attending (not competing in) a talent show with her mother. She was soon appearing in commercials for Burger King, including some of the first American ads to directly name and criticize a competitor. The pitch was that McDonald's burgers were 20% smaller than Burger King's burgers, and the first commercial had Ms. Gellar saying, "Do I look 20% smaller to you?" The dim bulbs at McDonald's were so incensed they sued Burger King and the advertising agency -- and Gellar, the 4-year-old kid in the commercials. She ... read the scripted line, "I only eat at Burger King", which, upon cross-examination, was revealed to be untrue. (Not many people only eat at Burger King.) The lawsuit was settled in 1982, when Gellar was 5.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on April 14, 1977 in New York City. She is the only child of Jewish parents Rosellen Greenfield, a nursery school teacher, and Arthur Gellar. In 1984, her parents divorced and she was raised by her mother. She was educated at New York's Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School and the Professional Children's School. She was a straight-A student and a good figure skater. She became close friends with Melissa Joan Hart, who later became an actress.
