Although considered part of the recent wave of women singer-songwriters, from 1996–1999 Sarah McLachlan had been integral in showcasing women performers through the Lilith Fair, a summer festival show, which had been called the female Lollapalooza. By 1997, McLachlan was an established star in her native Canada, and a rising star in the United States on the strength of five albums, beginning with Touch in 1989, which yielded the college radio hits “Vox” and “Steaming.” 1994's Fumbling Toward Ecstasy further increased her popularity, selling more than 2 million copies in the U.S. In 1995, she released The Freedom Sessions, a multimedia disc that included unreleased material and interactive videos. Her 1997 release, Surfacing, debuted at number two on the pop charts, received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Album, and produced “Building a Mystery,” McLachlan's first top-ten hit and the winner of the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance. In addition, she was awarded a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance (“Last Dance”). She took several years off from touring and recording, returning with 2003's album Afterglow. She has ... participated in the tsunami relief telethon and the Live 8 concerts.

Since signing with Arista nearly two decades ago, every one of Sarah McLachlan's studio and live albums and videos have been certified gold, platinum, multi-platinum, or diamond by the CRIA, starting with Touch (1988) and Solace (1991), both platinum sellers. Her 1994 breakthrough, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (2x platinum) was followed by the digitally enhanced multimedia version of The Freedom Sessions (1995, gold). Sarah's landmark fourth album, the Diamond certified Surfacing (1997), contained two Grammy Award-winning tracks, as "Building a Mystery" won for Best Female Pop Vocal, and "Last Dance" was voted Best Pop Instrumental. 1999's quadruple-platinum Mirrorball, and its platinum long-form video counterpart, were both culled from that year's Lilith Fair tour, and spun off Sarah's third Grammy-winning performance, as "I Will Remember You" won for Best Female Pop Vocal. The 5 times platinum Afterglow followed in 2003, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album, while its opening track, "Fallen" was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal.

Sarah McLachlan was one of the most influential artists of the mid- to late '90s, when she instituted the successful multiartist Lilith Fair tour and ushered a parade of female singer/songwriters into the upper regions of the pop charts. Even with the benefit of hindsight, there's precious little about Sarah McLachlan's 1988 debut, Touch, that foreshadows her eventual rise to fame. On Touch, she's just a 20-year-old girl from Nova Scotia who sounds like an overly earnest cross between Kate Bush and Enya. Still, there's at least a hint of real drama in the lilting "Vox" and "Sad Clown," and her wordless aria on the title track is, in a word, gorgeous.
