Canadian singing star Sarah McLachlan thrilled a couple of hundred school students Wednesday with an intimate live performance, a rare public appearance for the singer since giving birth to her second child. McLachlan returned to the stage Wednesday, taking time off from caring for her seven-month-old baby to perform for students from seven area schools. "One of the most rewarding times is seeing the kids come together in ensembles such as this today and playing," McLachlan told reporters after performing three songs inside the venerable Commodore Ballroom in downtown Vancouver. On stage with her were young students from Daniel Woodward elementary school in Richmond and a jazz band from Gladstone senior secondary in Vancouver. They were two of seven schools to receive Band Aid grants through MusiCan, the charitable arm of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. After the two on-stage bands performed â??

Sarah pays tribute to two leading Canadian singer-songwriters on Wintersong. “River” comes from Joni Mitchell’s 1971 album Blue, with the memorable lyrics “It’s coming on Christmas, they’re cutting down trees…” “Song For A Winter's Night” was written by Gordon Lightfoot and originally recorded in 1967 for his second album, The Way I Feel. From the Great American Songbook, Sarah chose “I'll Be Home For Christmas,” previously recorded by Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys, among others; and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” made famous by Judy Garland in the 1944 film, Meet Me in St. Louis.
