Sarah: Abraham
built 289 days ago
Once Isaac and Ishmael began to grow up, Sarah asked Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away and not to allow Ishmael to share an inheritance with Isaac. Biblical commentators disagree as to the reason why she did not want Ishmael in her house. Some say Ishmael was worshipping other gods, others say he was teasing Isaac or bragging that, as firstborn, he would receive a double portion of the inheritance. God told Abraham to listen to Sarah and the next morning, Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael away.

As Isaac grew up, according to the Bible, his older half-brother Ishmael began to mock him and Sarah demanded that Abraham send away both Hagar and Ishmael to protect Isaac. Some believe that Sarah's shunning, and the hard life of exile that followed, angered Ishmael and that this is one of the causes of strife between Islam and Christianity, as Ishmael became a prophet. Years later, at the death of Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael came together again to bury their father in the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron (Gen. 25:9).

The first piece of information the bible gives about Sarah is that she was barren. This was significant since God promised Abraham earlier that his children would become a great nation. After ten years of living in Canaan, when Sarah still had not conceived, she gave Abraham her maid, Hagar, as a concubine. Once Hagar conceived, Hagar lowered her opinion of Sarah, and Sarah began to treat her harshly. Hagar ran away and returned only after God spoke to her, blessed her and ordered her to go back to Sarah. When Abraham was 86 years old, Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.

The hadith tell of an incident when Abraham called Sarah his sister, though Sarah was not biologically related to him. Muslim theologians explain that Abraham referred to Sarah as a sister in faith when he said "There are no believers on the surface of the earth except you [Sarah] and me." Thus Abraham neither lied, nor married his biological sister.[14]

Originally named Sarai, The Lord renamed her Sarah, meaning princess, after she had married Abraham (see ... On His Own Two Feet). Sarah became the mother of Isaac (see also Isaac's Faith And Obedience and Isaac and Ishmael) and through Isaac the grandmother of Jacob, who God renamed Israel. Sarah is therefore one of the ancestors of all of the Israelites, and of Jesus Christ. In God's Own Words:
