Sappho: Writings
built 635 days ago
In such a role as teacher-priestess representing the Academy, Sappho in her literary imagination enters the temple. In the back room before the seated statue she kneels, her eyes are level with the painted designs on the throne. In fact the words "painted throne" locate her in the chamber bending low atthe throne first, before she dares look at the goddess' countenance.
In 1876 Sappho was sold to Prince Sciarra de Colonia from Naples who often sailed in regattas on the French Riviera. After the noble Italian’s death, Sappho again sailed to the Solent. Its new English owner, George Marvin, sailed it for a short while before scrapping it in Cowes, in 1887.

Sappho is alluding to the arrival of the dawn as the arrival of the goddess Eos announcing the beginning of a new day with her rosy fingers and golden slippers. She is invoking the mysterious and mystical quality of the dawn as a delicate and evanescent quality. She must be one of the most beautiful and graceful of the goddesses.

Solon of Athens, son of Execestides, when his nephew sang a song of Sappho over the wine at dinner, enjoyed the song greatly and asked the boy to teach it to him. And when someone asked why he was so enthusiastic about this song, he replied: "I just want to learn it and die."
by Édouard-Henri Avril Sappho was reported to have three brothers; Erigyius (or Eurygius), Larichus and Charaxus. The Oxyrhynchus papyrus says that Charaxus was the eldest but that Sappho was more fond of the young Larichus.[11] According to Athenaeus, Sappho often praised Larichus for pouring wine in the town hall of Mytilene, an office held by boys of the best families.[12] This indication that Sappho was born into an aristocratic family is consistent with the sometimes rarefied environments which her verses record.
Sappho's time is a time of change. Colonies along the Mediterranean coasts start flourishing, sometimes becoming more prominent than their parent-cities, democracy is competing tyranny in many a city-state and politics become quite interesting and affect people's lives.
