built 291 days ago
Santana, who was eligible to become a free agent at season's end, is coming off his worst season since becoming a full-time starter. He ended the year 15-13 with a 3.33 earned run average, but was just 5-7 with a 4.04 ERA after the break, allowing 88 hits (16 of which were home runs) over 98 innings.

Santana's numbers slipped last season. He finished 15-13 and lost seven of his final 11 decisions as his ERA rose from 2.60 to 3.33, his highest since 2001. He allowed a career-high 33 homers _ most in the AL.

How are you going to feel having to make a press release if Santana ends up missing 18 months with TJ surgery? That’s a hell of a lot more palatable for a kid making $400k a season than a guy you gave up kids for and are on the hook for $50mm at two seasons of lost performance.
