Best known for the legendary group that bears his name, Carlos Santana has been an elemental force in global musical culture for almost four decades. Since Santana's landmark 1969 debut album and explosive performance at Woodstock that year, Santana has sold over 100 million records and performed for more than 100 million fans internationally. Carlos' many major awards include a record-tying nine GRAMMYs for a single project for 1999's Supernatural, as well as three Latin GRAMMYs and scores of other music and humanitarian honors. As central to Santana's identity as his visionary artistic legacy is his spirit of giving back - in 1998, Carlos and his wife, author Deborah Santana, established the Milagro Foundation, which has granted over $2 million to organizations supporting underserved youth in the areas of health, education and the arts worldwide. In 1972 Santana became a huge fan of the pioneering fusion band The Mahavishnu Orchestra and its guitarist John McLaughlin. Aware of Santana's interest in meditation, McLaughlin introduced Santana and Deborah to his guru, Sri Chinmoy. Chinmoy later accepted them as disciples in 1973 and Santana was given the name "Devadip" - meaning "The lamp, light and eye of God." Santana and McLaughlin recorded an album together,Love, Devotion, Surrender with members of Santana and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, along with percussionist Don Alias and organist Larry Young, who both had made appearances on Miles Davis' classic Bitches Brew in 1969.

Montreux is ... the first stop on the itinerary presenting the Salvador Santana Band -- lead by Carlos and Deborah Santana's son Salvador -- as the opening act. Salvador has occasionally sat in on keyboards with Santana, and three June 2004 concerts at San Francisco's historic Warfield Theatre marked the first time his own group appeared on the bill supporting his father's legendary band. During one show, Carlos joined Salvador and company on a song, and while nothing is officially planned, intergenerational Santana jams are likely to occur during the European tour.
