Mets Logo Santana's old contract, which included a $13.25 million salary for 2008, was ripped up. He'll make $19 million this year, $20 million in 2009, $21 million in 2010, $22.5 million in 2011, $24 million in 2012 and $25.5 million in 2013. The 2014 option is worth $25 million and includes a $5.5 million buyout. It could vest based on innings pitched or Cy Young balloting results. Santana ... received a no-trade clause under the terms of the deal.
According to ESPN.com, Santana opened his negotiations with the Mets by asking for $28 million per year. After getting Santana to relent on salary, the Mets reportedly tried to get him to accept a five-year extension, but he held out for six.

The lead single was "Smooth", a dynamic cha-cha stop-start number co-written and sung by Rob Thomas, and laced throughout with Santana's guitar guitar fills and runs. The track's energy was immediately apparent on radio, and it was played on a wide variety of station formats. "Smooth" spent twelve weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming in the process the last #1 single of the 1990s. The music video set on a hot barrio street was ... very popular. Supernatural reached number one on the US album charts and the follow-up single, "Maria Maria", featuring the R&B duo The Product G&B, also hit number one, spending ten weeks there in the summer of 2000. Supernatural eventually sold over 15 million copies in the United States, making it Santana's biggest sales success by far.
The next step is for the Mets to negotiate a contract extension with Santana. The three-time all-star is owed $13.25 million this year and likely will seek an extension of five-to-seven years worth at least $20 million annually.
