Sandy Lyle is one of Britain's best-loved golfers. As both Faldo and Ballesteros have commented, he had 'the greatest God-given talent in history' and in 1985 he became the first Briton for 16 years to win the Open. Three years later he was the first British player ever to win the Masters, playing one of the most famous shots of all time to secure victory. At the height of Lyle's success, his swing began to fail. He refused to give up, earning him huge admiration and respect from the golfing public. In 2005 he showed he still has the talent to compete, when he went into the final round of the Open very much in contention, six behind Tiger Woods.

Sandy Lyle, who was one of Woosie’s assistants this year, has recently put his name forward as a candidate, saying "What looks good timing is 2010 at the Celtic Manor in Wales. That is the one I’d be lobbying for". Lyle may fancy his chances, but there seems to be a growing feeling amongst the media that Colin Montgomerie may be the preferred choice, as it is unlikely he may qualify for the match at the age of 47.

Sandy Lyle birdies the 15th to go into the lead. He then takes two pars before arriving at the 18th. At the 18th, two shots take him just to the left of the green. As Lyle's chip shot, to take him out of Duncan's Hollow, rolls back almost to his feet, he falls to the ground in frustration. When a putt rolls past the hole, he is suddenly in danger of taking a 6. His partner, Christy O'Connor, asks spectators for silence.

Sandy Lyle was born in Glen Falls, New York, at the end of the last century and started to juggle at age 12. He was self taught and always tried to be original in his presentation. He was not satisfied to copy other acts and worked out many original ideas. His dress as a Scotsman in full kilts was just one colorful example.
