Sandy Lyle: Victory
built 275 days ago
Lyle's first major title came at Royal St George's in 1985. After sinking birdies putts at the 14th (35 feet) and 15th (12 feet), he arrived at the final hole needing a par for victory. But his second shot at the par-4, 18th, trickled off the left side of the green. He took three more shots to hole out, and his bogey-five allowed David Graham and Bernhard Langer the opportunity to force a play-off. Both came to the final hole needing a birdie to tie Lyle. But Graham found a greenside bunker with his approach and Langer overshot the green.
Lyle won his first Major, the Open, in 1985. Perhaps the highlight of his career was victory in the 1988 US Masters. He was the first non-American to win the event, a victory made sweeter because of the intense competition between America and Europe in all aspects of golf. Lyle has ... played on 5 Ryder Cup squads and represented Scotland 3 times in the World Cup.

Sandy Lyle Lyle had been a professional for eight years prior to his first major victory, winning the prestigious Rookie of the Year accolade in 1977. His career, especially in its latter stages, was blighted by inconsistency and he was renowned throughout the game as a likeable character whose form could change as quickly as the unpredictable British weather.
