Sandy Lyle turns 50 next February. The Champions Tour beckons and with it the opportunity perhaps to make up for being born in the right place at the wrong time. One can probably say this about many golfers but for some the mulligan that is the Senior Tour is both deserving and needed.

On a personal level, Lyle has an amiable character and is modest despite his success and stardom. He enjoys Chinese food and is somewhat of an expert. He is ... a keen enthusiastic of motorbike scrambling. In 1989, Lyle's form began to slump. His last victory was the Volvo Masters in 1992 and since then has quietly retired from the tour.

Lyle topped the European Tour's order of merit in 1979, 1980 and 1985. He finished in the top ten nine times between 1979 and 1992. He was ... a member of the PGA Tour for several years and finished seventh on the money list in 1988. In 1989 Lyle's form fell away, and apart from a good year in Europe in 1992, he has not been a regular contender since then. His prime thus ended in his early thirties, which is unusually young for a professional golfer.

While well known for his calmness under pressure, Lyle has been unlucky with his form which has swung from exceptional to mediocre. However, he has won 27 world tour titles and has earned millions of pounds during his career, easily one of the world's most successful golfers. He was awarded an MBE in 1987. His last major title was the Volvo Masters (1992) and since then he has quietly retired. He now lives in West Linton in the Scottish Borders and was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
