1. Sandy Dennis
   Sandy Dennis was born Sandra Dale Dennis in Nebraska in 1937. An accomplished actress, she starred in such films as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Academy Award, Best Supporting Actress), Up the Down Staircase, and Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean; and on stage, including A Thousand Clowns (Tony Award, Best Supporting Actress) and Any Wednesday (Tony Award, Best Actress). She spent her last years in Westport, Connecticut, surrounded by her gardens, close friends, and her many, many cats. A quiet, gentle, kind person, she died of ovarian cancer in 1992 at the age of fifty-four.
2. Sandy Dennis -- Jack Lemmon
   The movie was a hit at the time and fans of Jack Lemmon (and Sandy Dennis for that matter) will want to see him in his prime. The two leads are now gone, but their work lives on and what better way to pay homage than this. The film ... contains a bevy of cameos by Carlos Montelban (Ricardo’s brother) and a pre-“Empire Strikes Back” Billy Dee Williams among others. Though this same theme was revisited in “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and later in the self-titled remake with Hawn and Martin, this remains the best of the three to me. Though New York has certainly changed in the time since this movie, we can see that no matter who you are, the city that never sleeps can still claim victory on those unsuspecting little people we call “tourists”. Recommended.
3. Dennis Miller -- Comedian Dennis Miller
   OVER 200 GUESTS at Deborah Karmanos' 50th birthday party Monday night at Somerset Inn in Troy suspected it was a special event when comedian Dennis Miller, fresh from the Emmys on Sunday, was the surprise opening act. The crowd was further impressed by the main act: Michael Bolton. Compuware Corp. boss Peter Karmanos said his wife was totally surprised and thrilled by his entertainment coup. Bolton, who rarely plays private parties, told Deborah, "You must be a very special person to have someone do this for you."
4. Jade -- British Columbia
   Jade was a rare and valued material in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The only source from which the various indigenous cultures, such as the Olmec and Maya, for example, could obtain jade was located in the Motagua River valley in Guatemala. Jade was largely an elite good, and was usually carved in a variety ways, whether serving as a medium upon which hieroglyphs were inscribed, or shaped into symbolic figurines. Generally, the material was highly symbolic, and it was often employed in the performance of ideological practices and rituals.
5. 1971 -- Albums
   It was all change in 1971 as the number one act for 1971 was glam rock duo T. Rex. They had singles success with chart toppers "Hot Love" (number two in the year) and "Get It On" followed by a number two for "Jeepster". The band ... scored the number five album spot for the year with "Electric Warrior".
6. Gene Hackman -- Roles
   Seen back to back to back, Gene Hackman's three leading roles in three current movies offer a clue to his nervy greatness: he seems energised by messing with his directors' expectations. In Wes Anderson's comedy The Royal Tenenbaums, he plays the self-absorbed patriarch of a family of despondent geniuses, and his airy cunning is in dry counterpoint to Anderson's arch, storybook compositions.
7. Elizabeth Taylor -- Richard Burton
   An evening with George and Martha (Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton) becomes a searing event of vicious verbal backbiting, disclosed secrets, alcoholic indulgence and bizarre fantasies in this faithful adaptation of Edward Albee's Broadway play. Winner of five Oscars, including Best Actress and Supporting Actress, this was Mike Nichols' directorial debut. Co-stars George Segal, Sandy Dennis. 131 min. 8. Spice World -- Spice Girls
   To accompany their second album, Spice World, the group now stars in this clumsy, inept film. Predictably, the team behind this tale of "girl power" is all male: director Bob Spiers, writer Kim Fuller and three producers.
9. Instrumental
   Instrumental groups were generally regional, products of the local music scenes that had been the source of virtually every significant innovation in rock and roll. The professional musicians in the music capitals - New York, Los Angeles, and London - had become insulated from influences outside the music industry, while local bands, playing in front of audiences which they had a direct rapport, started new styles, dance and music developments.
10. Robert Altman -- Director Robert Altman
    One month ago today, maverick filmmaker Robert Altman was at the Hamptons International Film Festival in Long Island, NY, reflecting upon his career behind the camera at a tribute in his honor. The 81-year-old American director walked on stage to a standing ovation at Guild Hall for the annual "A Conversation With..." event and afterwards, was toasted during a Nick and Toni's dinner hosted by Picturehouse. That evening, he held court in the middle of the restaurant, receiving well-wishers. Altman died at a Los Angeles hospital last night (Monday) from complications due to cancer, according to his New York City production company, Sandcastle 5. For the last 18 months Altman continued to live and work with the disease and was in pre-production on a new film which he planned to shoot in February.
