Sandra Dee: Bobby Darin
built 656 days ago
WHILE STILL in her teens Sandra Dee was one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, ranked above Frank Sinatra and John Wayne. She was the pin-up on the bedroom walls of thousands of American early-teenage boys, thanks to her cute, blonde good looks and a screen character which always tantalised fevered young imaginations with the suggestion that she was on the verge of breaking out of satin bows and bobby sox into sexual maturity.

In the next few years Sandra Dee and Darin started working together. They worked together in “Come September” (1961), “If A Man Answers” (1962), “The Funny Feeling” (1965), all of which were huge successes. Sandra’s marriage with Darin ended in 1967, causing her great mental trauma and depression.

In 1960, while filming Come September (released in 1961), 18-year-old Dee co-starred and fell in love with teen icon Bobby Darin. The two were married in December of 1960 and had a son, Dodd, the following year. The couple would ... star together in If a Man Answers (1962) and That Funny Feeling (1965). The marriage lasted seven years and abruptly ended in 1967 concurrent with the end of Dee’s film career. Darin died at the early age of 37 from congestive heart failure and his death took quite a toll on Dee. She went into a state of severe depression, began to drink heavily and abused drugs.

There were starlets who made good and then there was Sandra Dee, who for a time in the early sixties was one of the biggest stars in the universe. (For all we know, she may still be -- alien races in distant solar systems may still be trying to figure out the intricacies of Tammy Tell Me True.) It's fairly unusual for pretty blonde starlets to attain that level of success, but Sandra Dee is one who did -- her very name is emblematic of an era and a certain phase of movies, maybe several phases. She was the original Gidget, a more than worthy Tammy successor (to Debbie Reynolds), and she ... got to marry a rock and roll idol Bobby Darin! And if that wasn't enough to assure her status as a bona fide Hollywood legend, Sandra Dee also got to hone her craft by working in movies with practically everyone who was anyone, including Troy Donahue, Doug McClure, Gigi Perreau, Beulah Bondi, Constance Ford, John Saxon, Peter Fonda, Luana Patten, Susan Kohner, Yvonne Craig and, of course, James Darren. Pretty good for a girl who was born with the name "Alexandra Zuck."
