Sandi Toksvig: Children
built 290 days ago
Following a first-class degree from Cambridge, Sandi Toksvig went into the theatre as a writer and performer and was a founder member of the Comedy Store Players. Well known for her television and radio work as a presenter, writer and actor, she has written six books for children. Her first adult novel, WHISTLING FOR THE ELEPHANTS, was published in 1999.
Sandi has a long connection with Hans Christian Andersen. In 1934 her great aunt Signe Toksvig published a definitive biography of the great writer - The Life of Hans Christian Andersen (published by Macmillan). Signe passed on a copy of the book in 1966 when Sandi was eight and it has been well read. Andersen's stories were among the first Sandi read as a child. That tradition continued with her children. When they were born Sandi embroidered scenes from the stories which still hang in her children's bedroom.

On the evidence of this warm and enlightening tale, Sandi Toksvig is as skilled at writing for children as she is for adults. ‘Hitler’s Canary’ is based on the stories of Toksvig’s own family, and recounts the escape of Denmark’s Jewish population to Sweden during the Second World War. Seen through the eyes of 12-year-old Bamse and his friend Anton, Toksvig manages to lace the action with plenty of humour but without trivialising the momentous events.
