In 1960, as tuberculosis cases lessened the Sanatorium helped more chronic disease patients than tuberculosis patients. Eventually the chronic disease patients were moved elsewhere and the last tuberculosis patients were moved to the Middlesex County Hospital in July of 1964. The buildings sat abandoned for over 12 years. During the years of abandonment, the San had its share of homeless inhabitants and vandalism as a 2 alarm blaze destroyed the Superintendent's building on November 5th, 1969. The Superintendent's building was immediately demolished as a result of the fire damage. The entire campus was razed in 1976.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium, located in Louisville, Kentucky, opened in 1910 as a two-story hospital to accommodate 40 to 50 tuberculosis patients. It has been popularized on television as being one of the "most haunted" hospitals in the eastern United States, and was seen on ABC/FOX Family Channel's Scariest Places On Earth as well as VH1's Celebrity Paranormal Project. The Sanatorium was built in 1916. In the early years of printing it was thought that ink was a cause for contracting tuberculosis. Pressmen's Home was interested in the welfare of the union members. The hospital was completely staffed, adequately equipped, and ideally situated for combating this deadly disease. The climate in the mountains was thought to relieve the discomfort. Members who contacted the disease could come to Pressmen's Home at no charge.

Located near Louisville, Kentucky, the Waverly Hills Sanatorium was originally opened in 1911 for the purpose of handling the treatment of victims of Tuberculosis. At first, just a small facility, the larger unit of over 400 rooms and staff quarters was added in 1924, and TB treatment was terminated in 1961. From 1963 till 1980, the buildings were used as a geriatric center.

The paranormal investigation conducted at the Tuberculosis Sanatorium was at the old Nyberg Building. The construction of the Nyberg Building was started in 1938 and finished in 1941. It is 528 feet long, five stories high and had a 512 bed capacity. At one time it housed doctor's offices, laboratories, x-ray and pneumothorax rooms, employees' cafeteria and kitchen. An autopsy room was located on the 5th floor, with a morgue in the basement.
