When a replica of the Maltese Falcon was stolen from John’s Grill in San Francisco, owner John Konstin turned to Academy of Art University’s School of Fine Art Sculpture to create a new one. Instructor Peter Schiffrin and students Zach Roberts and Ah Young Jeon have spent the past month developing a replica of the famous movie icon. "One of the hardest things was making this like the original Maltese Falcon, but not too much like the falcon," Schifrin said. "I wanted to make this more falcony, because the original was more parroty or even pigeony."

Physicians at the San Francisco and San Diego campuses of the University of California announced on 29 August that they will set up a scientific research centre to study the medical uses and effects of marijuana. The new Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research, which is to be established in San Diego, will start off with $3 million in state money for its first year, the doctors said.
