San Francisco: San Francisco Bay
built 309 days ago
Modeled after similar events in Sydney and London, Lights Out San Francisco will be the first event of its kind in the United States. Lights will go out at a variety of structures, including the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as in Bay Area restaurants, government buildings, and homes. It is estimated that one hour of energy conservation in San Francisco could save as much as 10 percent of the energy consumed on a Saturday night.

The San Francisco metro area is the sixth-largest TV market[55] and the fourth largest radio market[56] in the United States. The city's oldest radio station, KCBS (AM), began as an experimental station in San Jose in 1909. KALW was the city's first FM radio station when it signed on the air in 1941. All the major television networks have affiliates serving the Bay Area region, with most of them based in the city. There are ... some unaffiliated stations, and CNN, ESPN, and BBC have regional offices in San Francisco. The city's first television station was KPIX, now owned by CBS, which began broadcasting on December 24, 1948.

A San Francisco Bay Area homebuilder can't sell all the houses it built in a development in Manteca. Current residents paid up to $630,000 for a 3-hour round-trip commute. But now they're auctioning the remaining homes, starting at a more realistic price of $285,000. [That's a 55% haircut - Ed.]

San Francisco's shoreline has grown beyond its natural limits. Entire neighborhoods such as the Marina and Hunters Point, as well as large sections of the Embarcadero sit on areas of landfill. Treasure Island was constructed from material dredged from the bay as well as material resulting from tunneling through Yerba Buena Island during the construction of the Bay Bridge. Such land tends to be unstable during earthquakes; the resultant liquefaction causes extensive damage to property built upon it, as was evidenced in the Marina district during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.

The Redevelopment Agency is now fighting hard to open a new front in the war right here in San Francisco. If passed, their Redevelopment “Concept Plan” for Bayview Hunters Point will be an attack of the super-rich, the highly capitalized and corporate organized, on the rest of us, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, who are, of course, as a result of colonialism in Bayview Hunters Point, mostly Black and Brown – 48 percent Black and 43 percent Brown, precisely. Some Supervisors seem to feel uncomfortable about voting against Sophie Maxwell, the only Black Supervisor on the Board, and seem confused by what they perceive as division within the Black community.
