The Zell Center for Risk Research at Kellogg was established by a gift from the entrepreneur. The center’s mission is to promote the study of risk and facilitate an understanding of how people perceive risk, while exploring the implications these perceptions have for risk management across a variety of enterprises.

In addition, he maintains substantial interests in and serves as chairman of various publicly traded companies. These include Anixter International, a provider of integrated networking and cabling solutions that support business information and network infrastructure requirements; Equity Lifestyle Properties, Inc., an equity real estate investment trust which owns and operates manufactured home communities in 26 states; Equity Residential, the largest apartment real estate investment trust in the United States; Capital Trust, a specialized real estate finance company; and Covanta Holding Corp., a multinational owner and operator of modern waste-to-energy facilities.

Zell most recently submitted the winning bid in the sale of the Tribune Co. announced April 2 and valued at $8.2 billion. Once the deal is complete, Zell will become chairman of the company’s board.

It was Zell's leadership that was recognized during an April 11 event at the James L. Allen Center where he received the Kellogg School's annual Award for Distinguished Leadership. Created in 2001 by the student-run Business Leadership Club in collaboration with the Office of the Dean, the award recognizes outstanding leaders and reinforces the importance of leadership at Kellogg, while ... enhancing relationships between the school and the business community. Previous recipients have included John W. Bachmann, former Edward Jones managing partner, and Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.
