Samhain: November Eve
built 276 days ago
MR Samhain Greetings In early Ireland, people gathered at the ritual centers of the tribes, for Samhain was the principal calendar feast of the year. The greatest assembly was the 'Feast of Tara,' focusing on the royal seat of the High King as the heart of the sacred land, the point of conception for the new year. In every household throughout the country, hearth-fires were extinguished. All waited for the Druids to light the new fire of the year -- not at Tara, but at Tlachtga, a hill twelve miles to the north-west. It marked the burial-place of Tlachtga, daughter of the great druid Mogh Ruith, who may once have been a goddess in her own right in a former age.

Samhain is the Witches' New Year's Eve, with November 1 being the first day of the New Year. It marks the end of summer and the beginning of winter. It is the final harvest of the year. This is the time of the year when the ancient tribes harvested for the last time during the year, and prepared for the long months of winter. Food was stored, animals brought in from the fields, and animals needed for food supply were slaughtered and prepared for long storage. The warmth of the hearth fire moved activity from outdoors to indoors.
Part of the Samhain celebration was to try to elicit goodwill from these spirits and the gods so that they would not cause the animals to die or the stored grain to rot. If the Druids were lucky, they may even be able to convince the powers that be to bring an early spring.

Samhain is one of the eight annual holidays referred to as Sabbats observed by modern day pagans, particularly adherants of Wicca. Its date is not universally agreed upon, as Wicca and other neopagan movements have no binding structure upon which all agree. It is most often observed on October 31 and/or November 1 in the Northern Hemisphere.
Although completed in 2002, “Samhain” has been gathering dust in the film vault awaiting distribution. That’s a bit of a shame, since this inventive mix of porn stars and outrageous gore is a fairly good way to spend an evening. An audacious bit of filmmaking, “Samhain” tries to break through steel walls and for the most part succeeds despite an unimaginative plot.
Samhain was much darker than the Misfits, with lyrics rooted in the occult and eventually the horrors of reality, as opposed to the sometimes cartoonish ghouls and ghosts of the Misfits. Samhain's musical style was a dark, gritty, and experimental combination of punk, gothic rock, and on the last album, heavy metal.
