Samba schools were formed comprising largely of people from poorer neighborhoods. They would get together near school yards (hence the name samba school) and dance to percussion instruments. A samba school can have as many as 7000 members but there is a limit to the number of people who will perform at carnival so as not to prolong the parade of each school for too long. As it is, with up to 4,500 people parading, it takes over one hour to cover a distance of a third of a mile. A samba school carnival entry will typically include singers (puxadores), a percussion section (bateria), dancers, several floats (carros alegóricos), flag bearers (porta-estandarte e mestre-sala) and giant puppets.
