Samara was located outside the Pale of Settlement1. Because of this Jews began to settle in the city only during the second half of the 19th century when the adoption of several laws made it possible for some categories of Jews to live outside the Pale of Settlement. Former Cantonists, young Jewish boys drafted by force to the Russian army, where among the first to be allowed to settle outside the bounders of the Pale, having completed 25 years of military service. According to the laws of 1859 and 1865, all categories of Jewish traders and craftsmen received permission to settle in cities outside the Pale of Settlement, with the exception of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Only eight Jews (all males, possibly former Cantonists) lived in Samara by 1853. By 1862, the number had risen to 92 and the settlement continued in the following years.

The city of Samara was founded in 1586 as a fortress, called town "Samarsky", started to be built as the strategical point in the complicated foreign relations between Moscow and South-East. Step by step Samara gained the status not only of a military outpost, but of a trade centre as well. Benificial trade with the East was becoming more active too. In 1851 Samara became a provincial town. The end of the 19-th and the beginning of the 20-th century was marked by the rapid growth of industry. Samara was called "Russian Chicago". The year of 1935 became a new stake in the history of the town.

The number of medal winners in Samara is growing. Graduates of the year 1999 received 173 gold medals and 504 silver medals. The effective program Children of Samara covers all fields of upbringing and education — preschool (in 318 kinder gartens), school, additional, extracurricular, at leisure. 27000 children are pooled in teenager clubs as per interests including sports, tourist, martial-patriotic, environmentally-biological, artistic-and-esthetic, decorative-and-applied, model building. Not only education workers and officials contribute to the project implementation but ... directors of different services, members of legislative bodies, war and labor veterans, tutelage councils. Old Russian tradition — universal involvement in upbringing — is being revived.

In The Ring Two, Rachel finds out Samara's true origin. Samara's spirit then tries to possess Aidan but is thwarted in the end. In the first movie, Rachel found Samara's body and comforted her, proving, in Samara's eyes, that she could love Samara with the care her own mother didn't have. When Rachel banishes Samara's spirit from her son, she returned again, pulling Rachel through her television down into the well seen on the video. Rachel managed to climb out of the well, pushing the cover over Samara. Rachel is saved when part of the wall breaks off, the water sending Samara down and delaying her.

Samara can be reached quite comfortably on the 35 km paved road from Nicoya. Daily direct busses connect to San José and there are flights to San José from the small airstrip of Carrillo, 7 km south of Samara.

There is ... daily public bus service direct from San Jose to Samara and return. It is quite rustic but very cheap, just $8. The trip takes about 5hours. From the terminal you also will be picked up by the hotel car.
