Samara has a rich and varied history. It was razed in 1670 during the bloody First Peasant Rebellion, in which Stepan Razin led 7000 Cossacks, peasants and the disaffected against the czarist government. Razin was later executed in Moscow. He was succeeded by Emanual Pugachev a hundred years later. Pugachev claimed he was the then-deceased Peter III, who was overthrown by his German wife, Catherine (the Great). Whether Pugachev believed his claim is still a matter for historians to debate, but what is not is the destruction his band of rag-tags wreaked on the city.

The place was traditionally rich in wheat and was famous as the main granary of Russia, the most important exporter of wheat, meat and leather. The rich city attracted many a talented and creative people. Boris Pasternak wrote about Samara in 1916: “Samara is the best, most sinful, elegant and well-organized piece of Moscow snatched out and transplanted to the Volga bank”.

The Zhiguli mountains near Samara formed Samarskaya Luka (Samara Bend). Near Samara the Volga turns to the right and there is a narrow bend formed about 3 kms. wide. Samara was founded in 1586 on the very beautiful place in the center of great steppe beyond Moscow, the capital of early Russia. During the Great Patriotic War (the Second World War) Samara was the second capital of the USSR. The Government of the USSR and many foreign embassies were situated there.

For a short period Samara became capital of several provinces. 1921 was the year of severe hunger in Samara, In order to provide support to the people F. Nansen (the famous Polar explorer), M.Andersen-Nexe (Danish writer), Swedish Red Cross Mission and officers of APA from the United States came to Samara. In 1935 the town was given a new name in the honor of bolshevik V.V.Kuibyshev. The Great Patriotic War turned Kuibyshev with the population of 410000 into the alternate capital of the USSR. Communist Party and governmental organizations, diplomatic missions of foreign countries, leading cultural establishments and their staff were evacuated to the town. Industrial enterprises and their workers ... moved to that place.
