For the first time in her career this week Samantha Stosur is the number one doubles player in the world. Her doubles title with partner Lisa Raymond in Tokyo last week gave her enough points to move past Zimbabwean Cara Black. Good friends, Stosur and Raymond joked after the match about how quickly Sam had moved up the rankings in the past twelve months. "What was your ranking this time last year Sammy, wasn’t it about 50," Said a jubilant Raymond after the win.

Ze is vooral succesvol als dubbelspeelster en bereikte op 6 februari 2006 de nummer één positie op de WTA vrouwen-dubbel ranglijst. In 2005 en 2006 behaalde ze zestien dubbeltitels, waarvan veertien met de Amerikaanse Lisa Raymond. Zij wonnen samen de US Open (2005) en Roland Garros (2006). In 2005 won ze bovendien het gemengd dubbel van de Australian Open met Scott Draper.

Samantha Stosur advanced to the third round when she upset fourth seeded Lindsay Davenport (USA) in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. It was the third career meeting between the two players and Stosur's first career win against Davenport.

In Wimbledon traf Stosur in Runde 2 wieder auf Mauresmo, unterlag diesmal nur mit 4:6, 2:6. In Los Angeles konnte sie erstmals gegen eine Spielerin aus den Top Ten der Weltrangliste gewinnen: in der zweiten Runde besiegte sie Lindsay Davenport, unterlag jedoch in Runde 3 der Serbin Jelena Janković. Zwei Wochen später in New Haven kam sie bis ins Halbfinale, in dem sie erneut auf Davenport traf, der sie diesmal wieder unterlag.
