MELBOURNE, Dec 24 (Reuters) - Australia’s top-ranked female tennis player Samantha Stosur has been forced to withdraw from next month’s Australian Open after illness in the second half of 2007 interrupted her preparations. The 23-year-old’s participation on the U.S. hardcourt circuit was curtailed by a virus she contracted in July and she was hospitalised in September with viral meningitis. The
Stosur first noticed something was wrong around Wimbledon this year howeve struggled onto the US Open some months later. After crashing out in the first round of the US Open, Stosur flew from New York to Tampa. She said that is when she got a headache. Wednesday 28th June proved to be a very good day for the Aussie Sam Stosur at Wimbledon with achieving a fine victory. Sam Stosur faced Michaella Krajicek in what appeared to be a very tricky first round match. 17 year old Krajicek is tipped by many to be a top 10 player in the near future and won the Ordina Open on grass last week, posting some impressive victories in doing so. Yet Stosur was able to establish a control over the match with an aggressive game plan that she carried out superbly.

Jankovic, 21, ended Stosur's tournament, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) and showed she was playing way above her world No.12 ranking. The Serb won the Auckland tournament last week and at the end of last season had starred in several of the majors and nearly toppled Justine Henin-Hardenne at the US Open.

Doctor’s have ordered Stosur to ease back into full training. For this reason she hopes the public will not expect too much from her this Australian summer of tennis. With the Australian Open not far away Stosur will be disappointed for the fans if she does not do well in her home grand slam... she knows she has a long way to go to regain the fitness level she enjoyed prior to her recent illnesses.
